The collaborative research “The Long 1960s” was launched in 2019, led by Professor ADACHI, the principal investigator, and Associate Professor Marco Del Bene of Sapienza University of Rome. In 2022, through the efforts of the Hasekura League, this research culminated in the publication of the book “Revolutionary Times ー A Comparative View of the Long 1960s in Japan and Italyー.”
The aim of this project is to compare and examine the various aspects, memories, and subsequent changes that occurred during the period of high-speed economic growth on a global scale, with the goal of identifying the issues and structures of modern society as it exists today. Additionally, the project aims to contribute to Japanese language education at the Sapienza University of Rome by translating into English historical materials related to the 1968 student movements, including student leaflets and records of committees that responded to the movements, which are housed in the archives of Tohoku University Digital Archives.
By making these materials accessible to researchers worldwide, the project seeks to expand the scope of this research. This year, we will compare and examine the 1968 movements and their subsequent impacts, including the situation in Germany (presented by Associate Professor Takemoto of Hiroshima City University), at the Hasekura Symposium. Additionally, starting in November, we will collaborate with the master’s program at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Sapienza University of Rome on text translation for their courses.
