■Abstract
As the proportion of unmarried people without children increases and the birth rate declines, the number of single-person households in Japan is growing rapidly. The transition to a solo society is not limited to Japan; it is also evident in Germany.
However, Japan’s social security system is built on the assumption that people are married and have children or family members living with them. How to support single-person households in old age and at the end of life is therefore becoming an urgent concern. Through comparison with Germany, this talk will examine how a new safety net that differs from traditional family structures can be established.
