On July 4–5, 2026, the 28th Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) held its annual international conference at Sophia University. Associate Professor Iris Haukamp (Media and Film Studies) of the Center for Integrated Japanese Studies (CIJS) attended both as a presenter and in her capacity as ASCJ Vice President.

Associate Professor Haukamp organized and chaired the roundtable discussion "Listening to and Writing with Sound: Rethinking Japanese Studies through Sonic Practices" (Session 6-N). Bringing together leading scholars in sound, performance, and media, the panel explored how sonic practices can offer fresh approaches to Japanese Studies. The session served as a preview of a forthcoming edited volume.

In addition, she presented a paper titled "Transnational Filmmaking as Infrastructural Continuity: Japan–Germany Co-Production Networks in the 1930s" during the panel session "Japan’s Screen Encounters with the World" (Session 7-L). Drawing on archival materials, her research examined the technical, linguistic, and industrial infrastructures of 1930s Japanese-German co-productions, demonstrating how these historic networks laid the groundwork for modern global filmmaking.

The conference provided an excellent platform to share ongoing research and foster international collaborations. Associate Professor Haukamp also took the opportunity to promote the upcoming international conference "Asian Sound Cultures 3," which will be hosted at Tohoku University this September, generating strong interest among the attendees.
